Motorcoach Over the Apennine Spine to the Adriatic Coast & Vieste
Day 3- 4: We left Rome early on our spacious and extremely comfortable motorcoach. Our driver Julio was a wonderful young man who took great care of us all. A short drive later we stopped in the nearby hills to learn about the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The ruins and gardens of his monumental villa at Tivoli were serene. We had much time to explore this beautiful villa before we boarded our motorcoach for the drive up and over the Apennine spine of Italy, and on to the tip of the rugged Gargano Peninsula.
To reach our destination we traveled up and down hills with hairpin switchbacks that held one breathtaking view after another. I was very happy Julio was a master at his job manuevering that motorcoach around each curve. He made sure to toot his horn to alert any oncoming cars of our presence. We arrived at the shores of the Adriatic Sea in the picturesque village of Vieste. It is a stunning community which is nestled into the cliffsides and hills of one of the most beautiful areas of Southern Italy. We stayed at Hotel Seggio, our cliff-side hotel, for two glorious nights. Here we enjoyed the warm sunny days while exploring the uncrowded town and beaches of the Adriatic Coast. Early October was a perfect time to visit. 80 degrees and no crowds. We took a boat cruise along the stunning cliffs of the Gargano Coast with many photo opportunities and time to marvel at the coves and hidden grottos. We were even lucky enough to catch a few locals out in their tiny boats bringing up fresh octopus.
The food was wonderful with a focus on the bounty of the surrounding sea. We were treated to a pasta making demonstration at the hotel followed by another delicious meal included with our tour. There is certainly no lack of food on this tour. But don't worry you are walking so much you burn all the calories right off. Really!
